Elementary school teachers in Ontario have been given the green light to resume extracurricular activities.
Sam Hammond, president of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO), said in a statement late Tuesday it is “suspending its advice to members regarding voluntary/extracurricular activities" following successful talks with the government.
The union had previously told its 76,000 teachers to not resume volunteer activities due to ongoing negotiations with the province.
“We are now confident that the government has demonstrated a commitment to dealing with concrete items of importance to our members,†Hammond said.
He said agreements reached by the ETFO are subject to an all-member vote.
Premier Kathleen Wynne said in a statement she is “happy†about the ETFO’s decision to reinstate extracurriculars.
“I hope that elementary school students, teachers and support staff across the province will once again enjoy the activities and programs that mean so much to them.â€
