New committee looking to revitalize downtown laneways
The city has received provincial cash for the initiative

A pilot project is looking to transform downtown laneways.

A new committe has been tasked with creating a plan on how to use $66,556 from the Association of Municipalities of Ontario for a main street revitalization initiative.

The committee's mandate is to come up with a pilot project to revitalize and redevelop the city's laneway areas to improve things such as walkability and connectivity, increased space for informal physical activity, new greenspaces and a canvas for public art.

According to the report, "the advisory committee shall focus on developing initiatives that will promote the re-imagination of the city's underutilized laneways and form potential partnerships with community groups, organizations, businesses and property owners in order to enact the proposed initiatives."

The advisory committee includes: Timmins Police Chief John Gauthier, Timmins Economic Development Corporation's Kelsey Luxton, Coun. Kristin Murray, the Porcupine Health Unit's Martin Paul, and Downtown Business Improvement Association executive director Noella Rinaldo.

For the funding, the deadline to spend the cash on eligible projects is March 31, 2020.

What is that amount of money actually going to buy? My guess is that is that they will purchase lights and maybe a security camera or two.
