P.H.U. Food Premises Inspection Reports - tT official thread

Post #1 by PeeverJ21 » Thu Oct 25, 2007 11:44 pm

Customers will soon have additional information when choosing a place to dine, after the Porcupine Health Unit amends a policy to make inspection information public.

Until Jan. 1, 2008, anyone wishing to obtain information on a restaurant, in regards to violations, convictions or charges made by the health unit, had to file a freedom of information (FOI) request That's all about to change.

"It was the policy of the health unit not to release that information unless there was a freedom of information request," said health unit manager of inspection services Bob Bell. "Through discussions we decided to bring it to the board of health for a change in the policy."

On Oct. 19, the board unanimously voted in favour of the change, Bell said.

Beginning Jan. 1, the public will be able to visit the health unit's website to see if any restaurants inspected have received critical infractions, charges, convictions or closures resulting from the inspections.

Bell said it was common practice for health units across the province to only provide information with an FOI request.

Only in recent years has that policy began to change, beginning in Toronto, Bell said.

"What has happened in other jurisdictions, and I'll use Toronto as an example, is since releasing this information there has been an increase in compliance by restaurants and problems have been reduced," said Bell.

Some of the items looked at during an inspection include the temperature of refrigerated and frozen storage, the handling of food and the protection of food from contamination.

An increase in popular demand by the public also encouraged the policy change, Bell said.

"Now, they'll be able to see if there are any issues and be able to make an informed decision," he added.

Deja vu all over again. At least now we'll know how they rate the restaurant that budgie eats out at with his pussy, or was that where he eats his ****** out, or something along those lines.

Wasn't that a direct quote- talking about eating Pussy. Is this the way a sound-bight can ruin a person's character? Let's start a new one- does anyone know if Gilles has stopped beating his wife?

I've heard from a few people that the cleanest restaurant in Timmins in Choy See Kam's. I was told that it is the health inspector's favourite place to eat. There might be more than one inspector but I heard this from three people over the last couple of years. I love eating at that restaurant and find their quality is awesome and love the fact it is family owned.

Post #17 by Foto_Gal » Sat Jan 26, 2008 7:57 am

The Health Unit has this section up and running on their website!

This should help to bring safe food handling in restaurants up to par.

What are your thoughts!!

Why doesn't that surprise me about the Golden Mile?? That man had a couple of infractions when he owned Taco Hut Benjamins... and now I know why I never eat at the Golden Mile..

Wow that surprises me about Lucky Star. Both restaurants. Both chinese owners.

It's a wonder they don't go into MacDonalds and check out their situation.. how many times I wanna go to them and say DON'T touch my food after handling money.. or go put a hat on when you are preparing food.

I saw one of the workers one day take someones money and then go back and make them a chicken wrap.

It should be noted that the Three restaurants all had infractions but only the Lucky Star was charged with "Premise maintained in a manner permitting a health hazard."

Channel Three news did a feature article a few days ago on the website. They mentioned all three local restaurants several times during the article. I guess that the sales rep from the advertising department can scratch three prospective customers from his list. The two restaurants that were cited but not charged may have a legitimate complaint.

When the owner of Golden Mile ran Taco hut (I worked there so I know) .. the health unit came in and inspected the place.. When breakfast was being prepared a crate of eggs was left out which was a no no.. They had to be kept in the fridge at all time. Bacon had to be kept covered. which made sense.. EVERYONE preparing food were to wear hats.. Which yes we did. not to mention any cleaning cloths were to be soaked in javex at the end of the night. I remember giving him crap for leaving chicken out... Of course I could get away with it.>LOL Giving him crap I mean.

janisjuris we were a taco/hamburger joint.. which served Benjamin burgers and such plus tacos and taco salads.. We did serve breakfast as well... eggs, bacon, sausage, toast... fried potatoes.

Went into Wendys yesterday.. my husband almost died from what he saw.. one of the workers was filling up serviette containers and decided to blow her nose then fill up the containers.. I told hubby if I would have seen that I would have opened my mouth right there... He didn't want to make a scene.. I said no but you would rather her germs all over????

The big problem is that there aren't enough crotchety people that will speak up. If I am in line at the 8 or under express checkout and someone is way over the limit, I will put on my best Count accent and play Sesame Street, Hello-can you count with me- 1,2,3,... If I see someone park in a handicap spot that doesn't have a permit showing, I will remind them about the need to display the permit. If I get the old line- I just have to rush in for a moment, I will occasionally follow them into the store and remind them quite openly that the spots are for handicapped people- not those who are in a rush or just too lazy to park properly. If no-one says anything, the problem will not just go away by itself. I applaud the PHU for publishing the names of offenders and violations of the health code.
