We need the relief!

Question: Have we ever had a forest fire in the area at an unusual time of the year? Between October and March?

Don't ever remember that happening. The only weird thing that happen was when the organizers of the snow cross at Hollinger Park had to truck in snow in February for the event. Don't remember what year it was. [think

MNR sends firefighters to B.C., NWT and Alta.

TIMMINS - Forest firefighters from Ontario are assisting suppression efforts in other provinces and territories.

There are 164 personnel from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry on assignment for forest fire management in other parts of Canada. There are currently 77 assigned in the Northwest Territories, 13 to Alberta, and 74 in British Columbia.

These personnel are from aviation, forest fire and emergency services bases across the province and include Fire Ranger crews, Incident Management Team (IMT) members as well as specialists in areas such as fire behaviour analysis, liaison and helicopter co-ordination.

One fire was confirmed in the Northeast Region over the weekend in Sudbury and it is is currently out.

There are currently two active fires in the region. Cochrane 4 is about 100 hectares in size and is being observed. Cochrane 10 is 29 hectares in size and is being observed. Cochrane 10 was started by lightning. The cause of Cochrane 4 is currently unknown.

So far this year there have been 160 forest fires in Ontario, burning 4,286 hectares of forest. During the same period last year there were 431 forest fires, burning 50,854 hectares.

The fire hazard ranges from low to high across the region.
